The Hudl lineup by the British retailer Tesco were popular tablets first released in 2013. Tesco stopped selling Hudl tablets in 2015 and, in 2019, Tesco stopped supporting the Hudl servers, making factory-reset Hudl tablets effectively unusable. Until 2023, there were workarounds that involving changing the date, however it no longer works.[1] This wikiHow shows other workarounds on setting up factory reset Hudl 1[2] and 2[3] tablets.

This applies to Hudl 1 tablets, and Hudl 2 tablets running Android KitKat.

Steps[edit | edit source]

Setting Up Hudl 1 Tablet[edit | edit source]

  1. Insert the microSD card into your computer.
    • You may have to insert the microSD card into a SD card adapter before inserting into your computer.
    • Make sure your microSD card has at least 1.5GB of free space in order to flash.
  2. Download and extract the custom ROM. On your computer, go to TMF Custom ROM Release V1.0 on GitHub and click the "hudl.20140424.153851.TMF-Custom-v1.0.img.zip" link to download the custom ROM. Extract the custom ROM.
  3. Copy the extracted custom ROM to your microSD card. Open the downloads folder and drag the custom ROM into your microSD card's root directory.
  4. Rename the custom ROM to update.img. Right-click on the file and replace the name with "update.img".
    • In Windows, you may have to show file extensions by clicking Template:Button and select Template:Button to avoid unintentionally renaming to "update.img.img".
  5. Take out the microSD card. Eject the microSD card and remove from your computer.

Setting Up Hudl 2 Tablet Running Android KitKat[edit | edit source]

  1. Power on your Hudl 2 tablet. Press and hold the power button until boot animation appears. It's at the right of the tablet in portrait mode, below volume button.
  2. Tap Start button once powered on. It's at bottom-right of screen.
  3. Tap + Other network button. It's below the available access points. A keyboard should appear.
  4. Tap and hold the comma key and drag to Settings key. This opens a pop-up dialog showing two options.
  5. Tap Google Keyboard settings button. This will open the Google Keyboard settings page.
  6. Access the open-source licenses. Tap About Google Keyboard button, which is at the bottom of the page. This will show 3 hyperlinks, tap the second one.
  7. Access Google Search. Tap and hold any text in the licenses and tap WEB SEARCH button to open Google Search.
  8. Open Settings. In Google Search, tap the search bar, replace with settings in the search bar and tap the app listed.
  9. Create a new user. In Settings, tap Users and tap ADD USER, then accept any prompts they appear. This will go to a new user's lock screen.[4]
  10. Set up your tablet as a new user. Follow the prompts, and if you want, log into your Google Account. Eventually, this will go into the Home Screen.[4]
  11. Download a file manager APK on your computer. On your computer, go to a reputable APK hosting website like APKMirror and search for a file manager that is compatible with Android 4.4 KitKat.
  12. Allow installing apps outside Play Store. On your tablet, go to Template:Android Settings, tap Security and enable Allow External apps.
